Pilates Studio is Now Open

On Friday, October 6, 2023, the new Healthy Lifestyle Pilates Studio opened to a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration attended by dozens of Gleneagles members. The ribbon was cut by club President, Michael Kartz. The new Pilates studio features four reformers and will offer private, semi-private and group pilates sessions.

What is a reformer? The reformer was invented by Pilates founder Joseph Pilates. It consists of a horizontal flat platform, called the carriage, which rolls back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end of the reformer by a set of springs. Springs control the resistance, or the ease of moving the carriage across the platform. A reformer also includes a footbar and long straps with handles. Reformers parts are adjustable for differing body sizes and different levels of skill.

How do you use a reformer? Complimentary orientations on the new Pilates studio were offered for the first week after opening and will continue to be offered on a frequent basis. Depending on the exercise, it may be done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling the straps, pushing the footbar, perched on the footbar, perched on the shoulder blocks, with additional equipment, upside down, sideways, and with all kinds of variations.

What are the benefits of reformer Pilates? A wide variety of exercises are done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance, all with low impact.

Karen Mikus, Director of Healthy Lifestyle says, “Reformer pilates has been a fitness modality of interest to our members for many years, and I am excited to bring this amazing new offering to our members. I invite all members – men and women, fitness enthusiasts and beginners – to give reformer pilates a try. You’ll be surprised at how effective this training is, and I’m sure you’ll be hooked in no time.”
